Career in Mining

Mining is the extraction of valuable minerals or other geological materials from the earth, usually from an ore body, lode, vein, seam, reef or placer deposit. These deposits form a mineralized package that is of economic interest to the miner.

Mining is a branch of engineering. There are various options to pursue both undergraduate and postgraduate in this field. The basic qualification needed is a pass in 10 +2 in the science stream. The undergraduate are of four years duration, whereas the postgraduate ones mostly last two years. Courses available are listed below:

B.Tech Mining Engineering

B.E Mining Engineering

B.Tech Mining Machinery Engineering

Diploma Mining Engineering

M.Tech Mining Engineering

M.E Mining Engineering

M.E Geoinformatics

M.E Mining Planning

M.Tech Applied Geophysics

M.Tech Bio Mineral Processing

M.Tech Mine Planning & Design

M.Tech Mineral Exploration

M.Tech Mineral processing

Post graduate Diploma Mineral exploration and mining

  • Entrance exams are being conducted in state and national level

IIT and NIT- JEE mains

  • For local government universities, then one has to crack state level engineering examination

  • IIT, Kharagpur

  • IIT, Mumbai

  • RIMT University, Punjab

  • University of petroleum and Energy studies, Dehradun

  • Acharya Institute of technology, Bangalore

There are more career opportunities in government sectors as compared to private sectors such as

  1. Coal India Ltd

  2. Geological Survey of India

  3. The Indian Bureau of Mines

  4. IPCL

  5. Hindustan

  6. Copper Limited

The designations of mining graduates are:

Mining Manager

Operational Manager

Mine Planning Engineer

Mine supervisor

A fresher can expect 20,000 per month and an experienced candidate can easily get upto 50,000 to 60,000 per month.

These jobs require little or no previous experience. On-the-job training may be required for some of these jobs. One must be able to read and write, though some require at least a grade 12 level of education

Labourer- loads, moves, cleans up, etc.

Janitor/dry man- keeps the mine clean

Blast helper- helps load explosives into the drill holes, makes sure everything is safe before blasting

Driller’s assistant- helps operate/move the drill, handles drill core

Sampler- collects ore samples for testing

What is the scope of mining engineering in India?

ANS: In mining engineering, there are enormous job opportunities available in public sectors or government organizations. Career scope in the field of teaching is also bright for candidates having master’s degree in mining engineering.

How long do miners work?

ANS: The miners usually work long shifts of 10 to 14 consecutive days, with some days off between shifts. The remote location of the mining operations requires some miners to remain in the mining camp for months before going back home. A typical 12 hour work shift is also hard to stand especially underground.
