What is a CBI officer?

The Central Bureau of Investigation is the premier investigating agency of India. Operating under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, the CBI is headed by the Director. Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is an anti-corruption body in the country. It looks the matters related to crime and it is also the Interpol agency in India. The CBI has its Academy located at Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh. The academy was established in 1966. Over the years, it has emerged as a major police training institution. CBI has also opened three Regional Training Centres (RTC) at Kolkata, Chennai & Mumbai.


What does CBI officer do?

The broad function of the CBI is to investigate:

(1) Cases of corruption and fraud committed by public servants of all Central government, Departments, Central Public Sector Undertakings and Central Financial Institutions.


(2) Economic crimes, including bank frauds, financial frauds, Import Export & Foreign Exchange violations, large-scale smuggling of narcotics, antiques, cultural property and smuggling of other contraband items etc.


(3) Special Crimes, such as cases of terrorism, bomb blasts, sensational homicides, kidnapping for ransom and crimes committed by the mafia/the underworld.

Structure of CBI officers-

The CBI is headed by a director, an IPS officer with a rank of Director General of Police or Commissioner of Police (State). The director is appointed for a term of two years.

The amended Delhi Special Police Establishment Act empowers a committee to appoint the director of CBI. The committee comprises of the following people:


(1) Prime Minister (chairperson)

(2) Leader of Opposition

(3) Chief Justice of India or a Supreme Court Judgerecommendedby the Chief Justice.

To work for CBI is like to work in any Govt. Enforcement Agency. You've to work tirelessly on files and less on field. This job provides you opportunity to travel across the country and you also draw 25% extra salary over to your Basic salary as hardships allowances.

1. Educational Qualification To be eligible for becoming an ASI in CBI one should hold a Bachelor of any stream. 2. Age The candidate must have attained the age of 20 years on 1st July of the year of examination and must not have attained 27 years of age on that date. The upper age limit will be relaxed by 3 years for OBC candidates and 5 years for SC/ST candidates. The upper age limit is also relaxed in favour of certain categories of employees working under the Government of India and Defence Services Personnel. 3. Physical Requirements a. Height i. For men -165cms. ii. For women -150cms Height relaxable for Hillmen and Tribals: 5cms b. Chest: 76cms. with expansion (There shall be no such requirement in the case of female candidates) c. Vision: Eye-Sight (with or without glasses) Distant Vision: 6/6 in one and 6/9 in other eyes. NearVision:0.6 in one eye and 0.8 in another eye


Education –

Short service commission SSC’s Combined Graduate Level (CGL) examination.

The minimum eligibility for a candidate to appear for the Combined graduate level exam is to have an undergraduate degree from any recognized university. You should be below the age of 25 and also meet the physical and medical requirements. It involves three stages. The combined graduate level examination, followed by medical examination and personal interview.


· Combined graduate level examination

The combined graduate level examination consists of two rounds of written examination. Both the rounds are going to be objective in nature and therefore the candidate will need to attempt answering multiple-choice questions.

The first round has just one paper and therefore the duration of this round are going to be 2 hours. This paper intends to check a candidate’s general intelligence and reasoning skills, general awareness, quantitative aptitude, and English comprehension. This paper will have 200 questions with each carrying one mark.

The second round has two papers with each having 200 hundred questions. A candidate is going to be given 2 hours for every paper and his or her quantitative aptitude and English abilities are going to be tested during this round.


· Medical examination

You must remember of things that happen during the choice process for police service or the military.Alongside all those educational requirements, you'll even have to satisfy the physical requirements also. in any case the items I told you earlier about the central bureau of investigation, you can’t expect to urge away with this part. Primarily, state police is responsible to maintain law and order in the state. CBI may investigate:

• Cases which are essentially against central government employees or concerning affairs of the Central government.
