What is Border security force?
The Border Security Force (BSF) is a Border Guarding Force of India. Established on December 1, 1965, it is a paramilitary force charged with guarding India's land border during peace time and preventing transnational crime. It is a Union Government Agency under the administrative control of Ministry of Home Affairs
The main mission is to guard Borders of our country along the deserts, rugged terrains against terrorists. They also protect the country against smugglers and enemies during the peacetime to prevent crimes. They are one of the seven Central Armed Police Forces who falls under the government for national security. BSF troops who are guarding the India land border often carry on patrolling along the boundaries on foot, helicopters, camel or horseback. During peace, general duties of BSF is to help people residing near border areas by protecting them against inconvenience caused as a result of natural disasters. Their duty also includes providing intelligence reports during the peace period as well as during wars. During wars, the BSF troops need to have a watch over connecting areas like roads, bridges, and airbases. They are the first force that employees even women contingents.
They have 3 branches depending on the nature of the work they carry.
Of the 3 branches, they have one for vigilance and general duties called as General duty branch. The other branches are Medical branch that takes care of all the medical facilities required by the troops charged with guarding India. The Technical branch is the one that keeps track of all the equipment and technical work required. In short, we can say that BSF is treated as one of the law enforcement agency in India

The tasks of the BSF are divided as follows:
1. Peace time:
Promote a sense of security among the people living in the border areas.
Prevent trans-border crimes, unauthorized entry into or exit from the territory of India.
Prevent smuggling and any other illegal activity.
In the last few years the BSF has, in addition to their duties, been deployed for counter insurgency and internal security duties
2. War Time:
Holding ground in less threatened sectors so long as the main attack does not develop in a particular sector and it is felt that the local situation is within the capability of BSF to deal with. The BSF units can continue to remain deployed in particular sector even in a war situation to release the Army for offensive tasks. In the event of a major attack developing, which is not within the capacity of the BSF to deal with, the Army can be expected either to reinforce the BSF with Artillery or other support, or relieve the BSF from its role in the particular sector.
Protection of vital installations particular air-fields against enemy commandoes/para troopers or raids. The role can be entrusted to the BSF Units which are placed under the Army's operational Control.
Providing extension to the flanks of main defence line by the holding of strong points in conjunction with other units.
Limited Aggressive action against para military or irregular forces of the enemy within the overall plan of the Armed Forces.
Performing special tasks connected with intelligence including raids. These are tasks which might be entrusted to BSF Units by the Army in a war situation according to local necessity. It would, however, be expected that the state of training and equipment of the particular BSF Units would be kept in view in assessing their adequacy for the tasks.
Acting as guides in an area of responsibility where routes are known. This is a task which the BSF should be able to perform.
Maintenance of law and order in enemy territory administrated under the control of Army. Normally, ordinary civil police force would be utilised for this task but the BSF could be used to supplement the civil police or to act in lieu thereof in a situation where civil police is not readily available.
Provision of escorts.
Guarding of prisoners of war cages
Assistance in control of refugees. It is the intention to utilise civil police force and armed Home Guards etc. for these tasks but again depending upon local exigencies, the BSF might be entrusted with these tasks.
Anti - infiltration duties in specified area. This is an important responsibility which will have to be performed by security forces. The exact responsibility of the BSF in this matter is still under consideration and separate instructions are expected to be issued.

The Border Security Force has its Headquarters at New Delhi and is known as Force Headquarters (FHQ) headed by a Director General.

BSF protect our international borders during peace as well as during war times. During peace, they may work as policemen maintaining peace and harmony in the country. During war time’s restoration of law and order is their first and foremost duty. To face these challenging times, the BSF staff at all levels needs to be trained and they never compromise on their training due to the commitment level involved. No matter whatever training you have been doing outside to prepare yourself for getting yourself employed at BSF, they have their own training centres like “BSF Academy Tekanpur” – that is considered as a graduate school for border men. Another school is “Training Centre and School” – a place for commando training. We also have “Central School of weapons and Tactics” – sharpen the shooting skills of candidates. Apart from the above centres, there are few more institutions that offer specialized pieces of training like “Central School of Motor Transport”. Apart from the above few skills that need to be developed on your own like Active Listening, Critical Thinking, Basic skills like Judgement and Decision making, and Time Management is a must.
First and the most important thing you require to be included in Border Security Force is a dedication to serving the country. Along with the aim to protect the country, the person also needs to be physically healthy and strong as they may be required to endure tough conditions on duty. They should also be a good team player with good communication skills that may help the team as a whole. As they are the guarding force of India, a person getting into BSF needs to be disciplined and courageous enough to deal with any situations during the course of their work. The most important thing for a BSF is to adjust themselves to any kind of environment and place irrespective of the working hours. Sometimes situations may arise that need to have a person take up leadership at a point so having those skills are also good. To keep up with the current times, BSF needs someone smart enough to handle the border activities and also technically strong.
No specialized courses are available for the aspirants to join BSF. Each rank has different educational qualification requirements. But the basic qualifications like passing Matriculation (10th), Higher Secondary (12th) in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and any Degree from a recognized university is adequate to serve our motherland by involving them in BSF.
Job outlook –
Constables form a major part of BSF in the general duty cadre and then as per their educational qualification and experience, they are promoted to the top ranks of Sub-Inspector, Assistant Commandant or an Assistant Sub-Inspector. BSF jobs are very tedious and demand a lot of energy and dedication. The initial entry is mostly as a constable and then they can grow to be a Head Constable to a Commandant and lastly to a Director General. Each of these posts requires various educational qualifications and different physical and mental capabilities. An NCC certificate of sports qualifications is always an added advantage to be promoted.

· How to pursue a career in the Border Security Force
BSF has officers belonging to different grades and cadres based on their eligibility. Since each and every post has a specific set of criteria, people who match up to the same can apply and get through. Posts are filled as per the ranks and a Constable is the first level that requires just a matric pass candidate along with few physical aspects of height - 165cms for men and 157cms for women. Next, the chest is to be between 80to 85cms and maximum weight for men to be 50kg and for women 45kg.
People having a flat foot and squint in the eyes cannot apply for the post and the main aspect is the age which has to be between 18 to 23 years. If you are a graduate and between 20 – 25 years old, you can directly apply for the post of a Sub- Inspector. An additional qualification with a graduate degree like NCC B or C certificates or expert in athletics can directly apply for the post of an Assistant Commandant. Hence the post of an Asst. Commandant is filled by direct recruitments or through internal promotions. The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) selects BSF candidates through written tests, medical and physical examination, group discussion and interview. Once selected they get posted after a year on basic training. Few officers in this cadre get a chance to work as National Security Guards or can also be a part of Special Protection Group. In case you have an electronic or civil engineering degree, you can find a place in the technical branch. This branch holds high importance as you can be in charge of handling the top-secret information that needs to be passed during the course of work. · How do I become a Border Security Force officer?
You can join the BSF as an Assistant Commandant (the highest direct entry rank at which you can join BSF) by clearing the “UPSC CAPF Assistant Commandant (AC)” exam.

· How long is BSF job?
Till the age of 57 years up to the rank of commandant, And 60 years above that. If you want you can resign voluntarily at any time, but only after 20 years if you do not want to pay for resignation.

Govt okays pension for all in paramilitary forces.
