An aircraft maintenance technician keeps aircrafts in optimal operating condition by performing scheduled maintenance or repairs as dictated by Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations and guidelines. They examine and replace necessary parts, identify problems, and follow maintenance manuals procedures to include but not limited to brakes, motors, wings and electrical systems.

REQUIREMENTS

1. EDUCATION: Aircraft Maintenance Engineering is a 4 years license programme. It Comprises of 2 years academic and 2 years practical training in the live environment. AME Course can pursue through Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), Govt of India approved AME Institutes in India. Aircraft Maintenance Engineering Course is related to the protection and well-being of the aircraft and its passengers.


The eligibility criteria to pursue an Aircraft Maintenance Engineering Course which is such as:-

  • Candidate must be passed 10+2 with PCM or equivalent AICTE approved 3 years engineering diploma in any stream or any higher qualification in science with Physics and Mathematics at the time of admission.

  • The candidate who is eligible for admission in B Tech Courses is also eligible for Aircraft Maintenance Engineering (AME) programme.

  • Candidate age can be between 16 to 28 years at the time of admission.

  • Candidate must not have colour blindness and any physical disabilities.

  • Candidate must have minimum of 45% marks in 10+2 with PCM or equivalent.

3. KNOWLEDGE: Proper aircraft maintenance is essential for keeping aircraft and aircraft parts in optimal condition, and ensuring the safety of pilots, crew, and passengers.


Repair stations and maintenance technicians perform maintenance and inspections on aircraft. The Federal Aviation Administration is responsible for certifying the repair stations and aircraft maintenance technicians (AMTs).


Repair stations are certified under FAR Part 145. AMTs are certified under FAR Part 65.


FAR Part 43 details the standards regarding the maintenance, preventative maintenance, and alterations of aircraft and aircraft articles and systems.

The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) is responsible for certifying repair stations in the European Union and member states.


AMTs maintain specific areas of aircraft depending on their certification and rating.


The different aircraft ratings are airframe (the aircraft body, such as the tail, fuselage, wings, and landing gear), power plant (engines and propellers), and avionics (electrical systems and instruments).


Most AMTs hold a dual airframe and powerplant FAA certification, and are referred to as A&P mechanics.


Maintenance of aircraft is a comprehensive, ongoing process. The entire aircraft needs to be examined, maintained, and have the necessary parts replaced to uphold the safety standards mandated by the FAA.


Aircraft are required to be maintained after a certain period of calendar time or flight hours or flight cycles.


Also, some aircraft articles have a specific life (flight cycle) limit, and need to be replaced immediately upon reaching the maximum use requirements.


Besides the aircraft articles that are due for replacement, all other parts need to be checked for faults or faulty performance.


Because of the noise of testing different systems, working long hours, and the expectations of maintaining high safety standards, being an AMT can be a stressful job.

Aircraft maintenance technicians use diagnostic equipment and gauges to test aircraft parts while keeping careful records of any work done. He or she inspects machinery to ensure it functions correctly. Aircraft maintenance technicians generally work on general aircrafts, piston-driven airplanes, helicopters or jets.


Some technicians choose to specialize in a particular area like hydraulics, engines, or other areas of interest. They must be physically fit, be able to balance, reach, and lift heavy objects. They handle dangerous chemicals and operate large power tools. They often work on ladders or scaffolds and endure loud noise or vibrations. The risk of injury and illness is high for this occupation compared to other types of jobs.


Aircraft maintenance technicians can be found working for private companies, airports, or the federal government. They work in hangers, repair stations, or airfields unless employed by the military, in which case they work may work at military installations or remote sites. An aircraft maintenance technician usually works full-time in 8-hour shifts. Overtime and weekends are required at times.
